Season 8 is the eighth season of the popular British dating reality TV show; Love Island, hosted by Laura Whitmore and premiering June 6th, 2022 on ITV2.
After 8 weeks, on August 1st,2022 Davide Sanclimenti & Ekin-Su Culculoglu were declared the winners of the eighth season and of the £50,0000.00 with Gemma Owen and Luca Bish being placed as the runners-up.
Production[]
The eighth season of the show was confirmed to be in production during the finale of the 2021 season on August 23rd,2021. After this on September 8th,2021 is was reported by the sun that the producers were looking to replace Laura Whitmore as host for the upcoming season. This comes after the backlash that was accumulated from her performance during the previous season's reunion show, with sources close to the Sun revealing that the producers were looking to try and keep the show fresh and are keeping options open.[1]
Names such as Maya Jama and former islander; Maura Higgins had also previously been mentioned as potential names producers were looking at.[2] However that being said, the official word from the producers was that there had been no discussions regarding her position as host for the next season, commending her for her performance on the show thus far. Later on March 26th,2022 it was reported that Laura had signed a £500,000.00 deal to return to her position as host for the upcoming season.[3]
On February 1st 2022, it was reported that this season of the show would be the longest season to date with a total of 10 weeks, instead of the usual 8 weeks. This was revealed after it was discovered within the terms and conditions of the application form that potential islanders would need to be free for a minimum of 10 weeks of filming during the summer.[4]
On April 8th,2022 the Sun reported that the upcoming season would be premiering in early June, on June 6th,2022 for as mentioned above; the longest season in the show's history.[5] However it should be noted that as of April 2022, this date hasn't been officially confirmed by ITV and is just a strong rumour. On May 24th,2022 this start date was officially confirmed by the producers.[6]
On May 6th,2022 the show released the first teasers for the new season through their social media accounts, featuring the tag-line; "Love, we own it", with the intention of airing them on TV the next day.[7]
It was announced on May 19th, 2022 that for the first time in the history of the show that they would be dropping their partnership with fast-fashion brands such as "Pretty Little Thing" or "ISAWITFIRST" and instead opting for a collaboration with Ebay, supplying the islanders with used clothing in a bid to try and change perceptions around purchasing clothes.[8]
Casting[]
Registration for applications for the eighth season were opened as soon as the previous season came to an end, before then officially opening on January 1st 2022 as advertised through their social media platforms.[9] As usual the producers are looking for young and attractive single boys and girls to take part in the new season.
On January 9th, 2022 it was reported that the producers were looking to invite LGBT and non-binary islanders to participate in a show first, with a view to make this the most woke season ever. An insider revealed that this was due to the fact that there had been massive backlash during the previous seasons when it came to the diversity of the islanders involved and while noting the complications this could bring to the format, they made mention of the fact that producers were still keen on the concept.[10]
Later on February 9th,2022 it was reported that the producers were looking to target potential islanders who are already in relationships, with a view to find to drama-loving participants. It was explained that there was a loophole found in the application, where it mentioned that if an applicant was already in a relationship, but was on the verge of potentially breaking up they would be allowed to go forward with the application process.[11]
On March 7th,2022 it was revealed that producers were looking to obtain the login details for any potential islander's social media accounts, as a way of trying to avoid a similar situation to what happened with Danny in the previous season, checking to make sure that they hadn't previously posted anything on their accounts that could be construed/perceived as offensive by both their fellow islanders or by the general public.[12]
As a way of expanding on their duty of care regime towards islanders, the producers announced on May 27th,2022 that they would be introducing inclusion training that would focus around areas such as race, gender and sexuality. ITV's head of inclusivity; Ade Rawcliffe made mention of the fact that this was all being done in the name of inclusivity and noting that the world as a whole was changing.[13]
Villa[]
On January 31st,2022 it was reported that the producers of the show were for the first time since 2017 looking to find a new villa for the upcoming season instead of using the one used in Seasons 3-5 & 7. At the time it was stated that this was because they were looking to find a space where they could introduce a raft of new elements into the show and were particularly looking to find a location closer to the mountains in Majorca.[14]
This was later officially confirmed by ITV's managing director of media and entertainment; Kevin Lygo during a press event for ITV's annual profits briefing.[15] The first photos of the new villa under construction were revealed by the Sun on May 6th, showing off a spacious but rustic-looking villa.[16]
On May 2nd,2022 it was reported that the producers were looking to expand the gym space in the villa, as a way of trying to encourage more hook-ups between the islanders, trying to capitalize off of the popularity that scenes surrounding this area have garnered with the public.[17]
The first official images of the new villa were released on May 31st,2022 revealing a villa featuring 2 floors with a make-up room, bedroom, bathroom, lounge and outdoor balcony area. This was coupled with an expansive outdoor area, including a large pool, bigger gym area, outdoor kitchen and decking and seating areas.[18]
Islanders[]
The initial line-up of islanders was revealed in full throughout Monday 30th May,2022 through ITV Breakfast shows and the show's social media pages. The line-up consists of 6 boys and 5 girls, with more islanders to enter later in the series as bombshells.
