Season 1 is the first season of the All-star edition of the British Love Island, hosted by Maya Jama and premiering January 15th,2024 on ITV2.
Production[]
On July 31st,2023 it was reported that the winter edition of Love Island, typically airing in January was axed in favour of an All-Stars edition of the show. A source at the time claimed that this new version of Love Island would feature the same format as the normal show, but with a slight twist in that instead of new islanders popping up, an array of "all-star" islanders would be taking part from across the previous ten seasons. This would also involve the inclusion of cameos from islanders who are already in happy relationships with the likes of Olivia Attwood being toted at the time.[1]
This all-star edition of the show was officially confirmed by ITV on September 5th,2023 through the show's official social media channels and thus confirming the rumours.[2] The first official teasers for the new season were revealed on December 10th,2023 with it being first shown during the ad-breaks of I'm a Celeb and "An audience with Kylie". Upon the airing of these teasers, it was also confirmed that Maya Jama would be returning to the position of host for the all-star edition.[3]
On December 21st,2023 it was confirmed that Ebay would be returning as the sponsors of the show for the fourth time, after the brand's partnership with the show had garnered success throughout the previous three seasons, with pre-used listings on the site from the UK going up by 30% year-in, year-out.[4]
The teasers also revealed a look at the new logo for the season, as well as confirming the time-frame of January 2024 for the season premiere. On December 28th,2023 it was reported that the launch episode of the new season would aired on both ITV1 and ITV2 simultaneously after the format garnered success with the BBUK revival.[5] At the time it was also reported by the Sun, that the season would be premiering January 15th,2024.[6] This launch date was later officially confirmed by ITV on January 3rd,2024 alongside the confirmation of the simulcast of the premiere show.[7]
On January 3rd,2024 it was reported that for the all-stars season producers were revoking the social media ban that had been in-place during the previous two seasons. Insiders revealed that producers were under the belief that the all-star islanders would find it easier to have their social media managed while in the villa due to the fact that they had already spent time in the spotlight and thus gave them the choice of whether or not to maintain silence on social media during the show.[8]
On January 4th,2024 it was revealed that for this first season of the All-Star series, the producers were going to be dropping the Aftersun spinoff series and would instead feature live interviews outside the villa on Fridays with dumped islanders. At the time it was explained that as LI-All-Stars was a spinoff and not the main series, the Aftersun side-show wouldn't be accompanying it while still assuring that it would be returning for the normal season in the summer.[9]
The LI podcast; Love Island: The Morning After was confirmed to be returning for the All-Stars series on January 5th,2024, revealing that not only would both Sam and Indiyah return to host it, but that they'd also be joined by former Season 5 islander; Amy.[10]
On January 9th,2024 it was reported that in a bid to change-up the format for the All-star show, Casa Amor was being axed. At the time it was stated by executive producer; Mike Spencer, that this change was taken so as to try and keep their All-star islanders on their toes and not make the show too predictable, while also promising a new game-changing twist for the show mid-way through. As well as this change, it was also revealed that the season was going to be 5 weeks instead of the normal 8 that a normal season would last for.[11]
Casting[]
Upon the announcement of the All-stars season, it was confirmed by ITV that instead of new islanders taking part a group of islanders from the past ten seasons of the show would be given a second chance at finding love.[12]
On December 27th,2023 it was reported that a number of the All-star islanders who were about to sign on were demanding a pay-rise for their appearance, specifically looking for a rise of 433%. This came after it was revealed that the islanders had been offered £2,000 for each week they were on the show, with insiders revealing that the All-star cast were clubbing together to try and put pressure on the producers.[13]
Villa[]
At the time of the season's announcement, it was also confirmed that the new season would be returning to the villa used in the previous winter season, located in Franschhoek South Africa. The first official images of the new villa were revealed, revealing a villa that maintained the same layout as the previous winter show, while also showing off the addition of multiple popular LI quotes plastered across the villa as neon-signs.[14]
Islanders[]
On January 5th,2024 it was reported by the Sun, that for the All-stars season there would be 12 islanders entering the villa on launch instead of the normal 10. At the same time, host; Maya Jama also confirmed during an interview on This Morning, that each of the ten previous seasons would have an islander representative in the season.[15] The initial line-up of all-stars islanders were revealed on January 8th,2024 just a week out from the season premiere and comprised of 6 boys and 6 girls.[16] More all-star islanders entered later as bombshells.
